Michael Gibbs' 39"-wide illustration "Zebras" was included in two recent gallery exhibitions. The artwork, whose format is a radical departure from illustration's more expected page-size dimensions, is one of three wide format illustrations that appear in Gibbs' handmade book Occam's Razor. Occam's Razor is a "flag" book that explains 14th c. logician William of Occam's philosophical maxim that is often (although not entirely accurately) summarized as "keep it simple."
The first show in which it appeared was "Turning The Page", an exhibition of illustrated books held at the Washington Center for the Visual Arts. Other artists in the show included Kinuko Craft, Leo and Diane Dillon, William Low and Sally Wern Comport. The exhibition featured illustrated books alongside the original art, and a separate gallery of handmade books.
"Zebras" also appeared in"Private Arts", an exhibition at The Artery gallery in Old Town Alexandria. This highly-anticipated show featured personal artwork by Washington DC-area art directors, designers, illustrators and photographers.
"Zebras" was created digitally in Photoshop, using an approach similar to the intaglio method of mezzotint. The image size of the framed print measures 6" x 39" and signed/ numbered copies are available.
